Why I’m Excited by Our GDC Event

Want to learn more about revenue optimization in gaming? Join us for the Revenue Optimization in Games Mini-Summit and Happy Hour on March 20, 2 pm, in downtown San Francisco.

We’re about a week away from our GDC event (signup) and I’m really excited.

One of the reasons is, of course, the speakers. Here’s the schedule:

  • The doors open at 2:00. We’ll have coffee for people who had a lot of carbs at lunch.
  • At 2:15, I’m kicking things off. I’ll be talking a little bit about the idea of Game Revenue Optimization and then covering the results of our recent survey on web storefronts (sneak preview).
  • At 2:40, Brett Nowak, the CEO of Liquid and Grit, will speak on “Optimizing Mobile Gaming Revenue: Navigating Apple’s New Rules, Leveraging Web Stores, and Innovative Monetization, User Acquisition, and Economy Strategies.”
  • At 3:10, Joost Van Dreunen, the author of One Up: Creativity, Competition, and the Global Business of Video Games, will speak on “Life after Live Services: The Next Era in Game Marketing and Monetization.”
  • At 3:35, Julian Runge, Principal Scientist at Game Data Pros, will speak on “Building the Basis for Monetization: Optimizing Player Engagement” (sneak preview of some of the content).
  • At 4:00, the reception begins. Great hor d‘oeuvres and various beverages.

That’s a pretty amazing set of speakers! Brett and Joost are two of the most insightful people around when it comes to the business of gaming (and Joost is just off an amazing 45-slide talk about “Games as a Platform” at SXSW. And nobody in gaming knows more about the science of personalization than Julian.

Not to mention — the emcee is John Szeder, who has been involved in revenue optimization ever since Alex St John donned a sumo suit to talk about promotional channels that nobody has ever dreamt of.

But, to be honest, I’m equally excited by the audience. I’ve been looking at the people who’ve signed up, and –wow — the list is extraordinary. We will prime the pump with amazing talks by world-class speakers and then … let the audience take over. The talks will be great, and the reception will take it to the next level.

But … even that’s not really why I’m excited. I’m excited because in 2014, at the Wolfram Data Summit, I gave a talk that featured this slide:

Actual Slide from 2014 Talk

Nine years later, the point I was making in that slide is still true. We have thousands of experts with specific focuses: web storefront people, in-app purchase people, ad monetization people, cross-promotion people, user acquisition people, brand management people, community management people, people, game designers, game economists, monetization designers, tableau people, …. the list is endless.

But we, as an industry, don’t have anything approaching a comprehensive theory of revenue optimization for digital entertainment.

We won’t have one at the end of the mini-summit either. But, 9 years after that talk, we’re at least in position to make some progress. And that really excites me.
